The Montafon is one of the most popular regions for cross-country skiers in Austria. With almost 100 kilometers of groomed trails, the region offers ideal conditions for beginners and professionals, as well as the highest trails in Vorarlberg. The varied landscape and the fantastic natural scenery make cross-country skiing in the Montafon an unforgettable experience. Whether classic or skating, everyone gets their money’s worth here. The cross-country ski runs can be used free of charge. We have summarized a few recommended cross-country trails for you below.
Schrunser field round
You can start this round from the football stadium or at the valley station of the Zamangbahn. The round is particularly popular because of its sunny and open view of the Schrunser fields in the direction of Zimba. Incidentally, this trail is the longest trail in the Outer Montafon and is almost 3 kilometers long.
Large Gortipohl round
This loop is ideal if you don’t want to tackle high climbs. This trail is relatively flat and there are no roads to cross. The start is at the Gortipohl tennis court or at the Mountain Beach amusement park.
Bielerhöhe-Galtür trail
One of the best-known trails is the Bielerhöhe-Galtür, which begins at the Piz Buin mountain inn. This trail is best suited for experienced cross-country skiers, as it is quite demanding, as a total of almost 400 meters in altitude is covered.
High-altitude trail Silvretta – Baggerloch (R1a)
This trail is the first section of the Silvretta high-altitude trail and is around 10 kilometers long. You can get on in the Galtür hamlet of Wirl. Arrived at the excavator hole, the route can either be continued or you can walk back. If you want to continue the route, you should be in good physical condition, as it totals 19 kilometers.
High-altitude trail Silvretta – Bielerhöhe (R1b)
This trail, which is the continuation of the R1a trail, starts at the Baggersee in the middle of Kleinvermunt and takes you to the Bielerhöhe. The Bielerhöhe connects the Montafon with the Tyrolean Paznaun. The way back differs only slightly. Since the Silvretta High Alpine Road is closed between November and April, you can enjoy incomparable peace and quiet here.
